The Circle Sessions – FICTION REFORM

Among working class bands, there is an additional satisfaction that comes with every milestone. A big show, a great review, a small tour, maybe even some cash – these are the especially sweet cherries on top for the musicians that trudge along in an effort to play their songs in front of a receptive, reciprocating audience. The misconception by now, has long been dispelled. The imaginary backstage full of important folks and warm hospitality is usually a dusty corner, some cold, domestic beers and a second to collect your thoughts before it’s time to hit the stage. Glamor, far from it.

For Southern California’s FICTION REFORM, the grind is all too familiar. Between small clubs and bar shows, the band has earned mainstage performances alongside the likes of Misfits, The Vandals, and most recently, Social Distortion. In part, the reason the band has earned those coveted spots is because they figured out long ago that performing music was just the fun part of the job.

As a crucial part of the Basement Records family, front woman Brenna Red and bassist Danielle Lehman talk about remaining viable in the eyes of their fans almost more then they do about songwriting. Having music featured on multiple TV series including The Dudesons and Rob Dydek’s Fantasy Factory both on the MTV Networks, the ladies echo a sentiment that seems to resonate in everything the band does – taking the stage is the fun part, but that only seems to happen ideally, when the business of being in a working class band is in order first. To be in this band, you need to work, earn, then you get the reward of letting it all show on stage. Watch edition of the Circle Sessions featuring the ladies of FICTION REFORM.

THE GLOVES ARE OFF, ROUND 1 IS HERE

Pulverizing Punk Upstarts DEATH PUNCH and THE SPARRING release the spit, ROUND 1

Orange County, CA – Aug. 12, 2011 – Channeling the roots of the punk subculture, two of Southern California’s most promising prospects have joined forces to launch their modern take on a time honored tradition. Simply titling the release ROUND 1, Death Punch and The Sparring go for the jugular with eight tracks of all out release. Contributing four tracks apiece, ROUND 1 is anchored by the fundamentals of cathartic punk rock music – driving percussion, flammable string work, and vocal delivery that is part punk swagger, part war cry.

From Los Angeles, the quintet known as DEATH PUNCH might be young, but have already cemented a fervent following among punk purists. Routinely supporting artists that span the generational divide, DEATH PUNCH has shared the stage with everyone from The ADICTS and FEAR, to STRUNG OUT and DEATH BY STEREO. Projecting a sound that is both aggressive and articulate, the five hone in on a message that manages to retain the socially conscious foundation of punk, while never forgetting the pit. In much of the same vein as The Casualties, Bad Religion, and Anti-Flag, DEATH PUNCH is indeed that old school feel with a new car smell.

A little further east on the 91 in Fullerton, CA, THE SPARRING has begun establishing their own punk rock legacy. On the strength of the band’s first 3-song EP, indie punk darlings Old Shoe Records immediately began a partnership. Cathartic, relentless, outright flammable, THE SPARRING would go on to land a spot on the summer long trek of the Vans Warped Tour, showcase their brand successfully at SXSW, and earn the adulation of a wide array of genre mainstays ranging from STREET DOGS and FACE to FACE, to EVERY TIME I DIE! and RIVERBOAT GAMBLERS.

The collaborative effort simply titled ROUND 1, marks the first split from OLD SHOE RECORDS  and ushers in a new era of ageless punk rock tradition. Featuring (3) three new, original recordings from each DEATH PUNCH and THE SPARRING, the overall theme to the album fits perfectly with the title – complete release. Stage dives, circle pits, 20 fans to one microphone, ROUND 1 harnesses the sheer combustion that is a DEATH PUNCH or THE SPARRING onstage. Both bands are also finalizing tour dates to bring the madness to a city near you.

These boys are taking off the gloves – things are about to get heavy.

OFF! X InCase at Room 205 – Watch The Exclusive Video

With raw enthusiasm we premiere the second installment of Room 205 with OFF! For this explosive episode, director Jason Farrell and set designer Tamarra Younis took inspiration from the legendary “Bates Motel,” located around the corner from Keith Morris’ Sunset Junction apartment.

Spooky, sketchy and fantastically well-lit, today’s hardcore matinee continues with the mauling wallop of “Poison City” from the debut album First Four EPs (Vice Music).

The four members of OFF! come from an array of truly awe-inspiring bands. Keith Morris (Black Flag/Circle Jerks), Dimitri Coats (Burning Brides), Steven McDonald (Redd Kross), and Mario Rubalcaba (Earthless/Hot Snakes/Rocket From the Crypt). Formed in Los Angeles in 2010, they’ve already released four EPs of classic hardcore and logged more road miles than most bands will in their entire existence. It is an honor to host this group of friends and favorite musicians in Room 205.

Look for the final installment of OFF! at Room 205 to launch on August 15.

Jim Lindberg Returns to Warped

The Past, The Present, and The Future with The Black Pacific

“I’ve been playing this music since I was twelve years old. I still wanted to continue playing music so I wasted no time at all in putting together a new project with a great group of guys and now we’re just looking to the future,” Lindberg said. “I was ready for a new beginning for me to play music that I’ve always loved.”

To argue that Pennywise was a staple of punk rock music, would likely be an understatement. For 20 years, Jim Lindberg fronted the band that went all over the world spreading their fervent message  that spanned from brotherhood to giving a big fuck you to the faces of authority.

For the first time, Lindberg is attending the Vans Warped Tour and will, yes, be up on stage but the view will be a little different. “It’s gonna be strange going out on Warped Tour with a new band after Pennywise was such a huge part of Warped Tour,” Lindberg admits. The summer caravan rolls into Southern California this week and the grueling nationwide trek is one Lindberg has made many times, with Pennywise that is.  Continue reading
